To be honest, though, there haven't been many movies in theaters the past few years that I've wanted to see. Tsukamoto had a new film coming out, but it actually didn't look that good. I absolutely LOVED "Vital," and was hoping her would do more projects in that vein.
I haven't heard or seen anything interesting in a long time. I mean anything new. Boring ideas presented in a LOUD, overdone style.
I miss earthiness. Holy fuck I miss earthiness. Minimal and deep. Something that isn't just there to entertain those who were born yesterday.
But this is just me yammering.
Have you seen Vampyr - Strange Adventure of Allan Gray (1932)? It's the best film I've seen lately. It's almost a silent film, which usually are quite dreamlike, but Vampyr is like a nightmare you love to see again and again.
No, I haven't seen "Vampyr" (1932). I'll keep an eye out for it. I absolutely ADORE silent film. I can't even count the number of times I've seen "Nosferatu" and "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari." Gorgeous, gorgeous art.
I 100% agree with you. The whole concept of "earthiness" seems pretty much gone from most film. Commercial film here in the US was always just about making money. But at least in the early to mid 20th Century, directors had good stories. That seems to be gone now.
God, I miss Bergman.
