My Finnish heroes

Martti Pokela

Martti Pokela (1924-2007) was a Finnish composer and folk musician who played the kantele (Finnish national instrument). One of my early musical influences (first album), also helped me discover the new darker and dreamlike direction (after 2014).

MY FAVOURITE WORKS: Kalevalainen Sävelmä (Kalevala Composition), Muut Ne Kuuli Kirkonkellot (Others Heard the Church Bells), Marraskuu (November), Riekko Hangella (Willow Grouse on Snow), Seitakivi (Seita Stone), Unna Ulla Nunnu

Hugo Simberg

Hugo Simberg (1873–1917) was a Finnish symbolist artist. He painted dreamlike visions, devils and death figures with love. "Haavoittunut enkeli" (Wounded Angel) is one of Finland's favourite paintings.

MY FAVOURITE WORK: Näky (Vision, or Waiting for Dawn)

Jean Sibelius

No, he's not French. Johan Julius Christian ”Jean” Sibelius (1865-1957) is the most famous Finnish composer. Growing up in Finland it is very hard to avoid "Finlandia", specifically the Finlandia hymn. He was fascinated by Finnish folk music and folklore as was I when I wrote my first album.

MY FAVOURITE WORKS: Andante Festivo, Finlandia, Elegia, Tuonelan joutsen (Swan of Tuonela), Sydämeni laulu (Song of My Heart), Kullervo Symphony

 Mana Mana

Melancholic rock band originally active from 1986 to 1991. They recorded one of my favourite albums "Totuus Palaa" (Truth Is Burning), 1990. Simple and honest walls of guitars with an interesting touch of mystique that will tear your heart out.
